Christmas Continued

After a year of planning, ordering, assembling, and testing, Grandpa has his train ready for Christmas. He has it all set up around the tree now and it is pretty cute!!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Since we will be leaving in a few days, it is starting to look like Christmas here at our house. It will be nice to come home and have Christmas all up. Grandpa is getting his train up and running too.

Happy Birthday to Emily and Glen

Yesterday was Glen and Emily Ruth's birthday. We hope Glen had a great day.
Eric and Tina invited us over for dinner. It is always fun to see an
d be with family. It was a busy day, so we didn't get to stay too long. We had to be back to a choir practice at 6:00. Emily turned 15!! Wow, she is growing up. Here are a few pictures from our dinner at Eric's.

We love to read and are always reading lots of good books. One series that we read several years ago by Jan Karon is the Mitford series. The first book is "At Home in Mitford." It was fun to get to know the characters. In the books, Esther is known for her orange marmalade cake. I've always wondered what it tasted like -- it sounds so good in the book. Well, tonight our RS Reading group is meeting. We've been reading a couple of books this past couple of months -- "John Adams" and "Fire in the Bones." But, tonight we are also supposed to bring a favorite cookbook and make something from the cookbook to share. I have a cookbook that is kind of fun. It is called "The Book Lovers Cookbook." In it, it has a excerpt from one of the Mitford books that has to do with Esther's cake and it also has the recipe for Esther's Marmalade Cake. So, I decided to try it out. Here is my results:
I'll have to let you know later if it is any good.

Using your Food Storage

I went to a presentation at Relief Society not too long ago by Liesa Card. She has written a book called "I Dare You to Eat It" Using your food storage doesn't have to be scary. We got to try some things and I've been fixing wheat berries. I thought I would share her site with you. She has lots of ideas and recipes.

WHOLE WHEAT BERRIES

Here’s a quick, easy, and full-proof recipe for cooking whole wheat berries.

1. Measure 4 cups of raw/dry whole wheat kernels.

2. Pour the dry kernels into a large slow cooker. Add 10 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of salt.

3. Stir.

4. Cover the slow cooker with its lid, set temperature on LOW heat and cook for 10 hours or HIGH heat for 5 hours.

5. Stir the finished 12 cups of cooked whole wheat berries and spoon into 4 Ziploc bags to be stored in the freezer for later use.

Hello to Blogging

I'm not sure what I'm doing, but I decided to start blogging. Sarah says I should call it Shirlene's Cuisine. I may put some recipes sometimes, because I'm excited about food storage things right now. But, I still like the title of Huber Happenings. Hello to all of you.
