This past week we celebrated our 48th Anniversary! It is hard to believe it has been that many years. We are getting close to 50! Wow! We left last Monday and headed down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Temple is closed for the next two weeks for regular cleaning, so we had the time to see some of the country we had not been to before. It is beautiful and we had a nice time. We stayed at Jacob Lake and drove out from there to the park each day.
We have driven through Jacob Lake many times when we went that way to go to Arizona, so it was fun to actually stay there. They have a motel and many cabins. Ours was a little rustic, but still nice.
We ate breakfast each day in the restaurant right there. They have lots of Navajo rugs etc on the walls. It is a very interesting place and also has beautiful things in the gift shop. Jacob Lake is known for their yummy cookies they sell. We have stopped there several times just to buy cookies.
This is Holly in the gift shop. Jacob Lake recruits students from BYU, USU, Utah, etc to come work there for the summer. They are all LDS and are very friendly and helpful. They probably have over 40 kids there to work.
On Tuesday, our Anniversary, we bought a painted glass art work that we have on our front door. It is really pretty.
So, now on to the things we saw:
Monday we arrived. It was so windy all day. We drove out to Marble Canyon overlook. We had to go on a dirt road quite a ways. In some places there were trees down and they had cut parts to get around them.
There were probably 50 mile/hr winds. We thought we might get blown away!
We took food and equipment so we could have picnics wherever we went. It worked out great.
As you drive through the forests, it is sad to see where there have been devastating forest fires.
It will take several generations before the forests are back. But, there are still beautiful areas too.
We drove through beautiful meadows with forests off to the sides.
There is a beautiful lodge right here at the North Rim. They have lots of cabins too and it would be a fun place to stay, but they were all booked up for the whole season.
There are several lookout points that we drove to and so many beautiful views all over the park. We enjoyed this beautiful place.
We went on walks and hikes, sat and read books, and Paul even went on a bike ride.
Look for more to come later.
